January 2009 - Jordan
Part two of our adventure was in Jordan. Our arrival in Aqaba was a welcome break from the fast pace and filth of Egypt. The streets were much cleaner and it felt generally calmer. Unfortunately our tour leader in Jordan was a complete waste of space... but enough of the bad because, despite our tour leader, Jordan was a really interesting country with plenty of surprises for us. We visited the amazing Wadi Rum area and camped overnight in a Bedouin tent. We walked, rode camels and took jeep rides through this beautiful part of the world and it turned out to be a real trip highlight. Our visit to Petra, which was my main motivation for visiting Jordan, actually met my expectations and was a really enjoyable though exhausting day. The Roman city of Jerash was a real surprise and the final highlight was a trip to the Dead Sea, so highly salinated that you just float in it, bobbing around like a cork. We left the two week trip feeling totally exhausted but overall it was a good experience. This was definitely helped along by the fantastic group of people we travelled with so a big thanks to all our travelling companions!
